Frying Pan Park

Hoofers and Heifers 4-H Club

Frying Pan Park Hoofers and Heifers is Fairfax County's only livestock club of its type. Our main focus is to work with and learn how to take care of and show the animals at the park. Our volunteer activities include feeding and bathing the animals, cleaning stalls, shelling corn, training the animals, helping with park mailings and generally assisting park staff. We usually visit the park on weekends and during the summer, but always call before coming.

Each year members work on project books. A project book is a record of all the activities we participated in during the year. It can contain records about a project animal, pictures from events during the year, a story about your project, and ribbons received from fairs. The project books are turned in at the end of the summer and scored on the Danish system. In September at Achievement Night, we join the other 4-H clubs for dinner, awards, and recognitions. Officers receive their pins, and project books are returned.

Culminating the year is the 4-H Fair. 4-Hers from all over the county comes with projects in food preparation, electricity, flower arranging, drawing, horse showing, rabbit exhibits, and many other categories. We show goats, sheep, and cows from the park in the livestock division.

When and Where We Meet:

We usually meet the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm in the Activity Center at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, Virginia. The park's address is 2709 West Ox Road. The phone number is (703)437-8261

Business Sponsor Program

Our sponsor program was developed to let 4-Hers buy their own animals. Before April 14th, the member must have a sponsor to participate. The company pays $200 to cover the costs of the animal as well as get their sign up in Frying Pan Park's Activity Center. They also receive a 1/8 ad in the 4-H Fair Directory and their picture with the animal and the 4-Her for their own use. The 4-H fair is attended yearly by fourteen thousand people. The park hosts sixty horse shows and two hundred thousand visitors a year. This is a great advertising opportunity and also is a wonderful way to gain recognition in the county.

How Do I Become A Member?

We suggest members be at least 9 or 10 years old to work with livestock. They must like animals and be willing to work hard on the farm and with their project animals. To become a member come to a meeting. Find out who we are and if you would enjoy this type of club. There are many different 4-H clubs in Fairfax County. If you do decide to join there is an enrollment form to fill out which is sent to the extension office.
